Q&A with Viv Drewa, one of the Midnight Oil Anthology Authors

Inquiring minds want to know what makes you tick. Tell us about your life.

I love to write and have since I was 9 years old. Since I haven’t worked since 2013 and had two mini strokes my doctor told me to do something to keep my mind working. He said writing would be great.

I love owls and use them in my books, except for this one.

What was your life like before you became a writer, and how did you get your start as an author?

I had an accident that put me on disability. Since I had the time I was able to pursue my love of writing

Tell us about your writing process. Are you a pantser, a plotter, or something else?

I’m a Planster I start out with a plot and outline then my writing just takes off on its own.

Do you have a favorite writing project or a book that still haunts your dreams that you would like to share?

I loved writing “The Owl of the Sipan Lord” I spent six weeks doing research for it.

Tell us a little about your story in the Midnight Oil Anthology.

It’s a story about a man who only cares for himself.

Teaser: A long-distance romance brings two people together, but after being ignored for a time Edana leaves. But does Charlie regret ignoring her?

Do you have works in progress?

I have three in the works. I will have one done by the end of August and the other two by the end of the year.

What are your plans for your next book?

I’m writing a series, Joe Leverette Mysteries, and I plan on plotting out the third book.

Do you have an especially interesting research experience to share?

Several really. For “The Owl of the Sipan Lord” I contacted a well-known archaeologist because I couldn’t find what I needed and he got back with me in one week. The other “Midnight Owl: Joe Leverette Mystery, Book 1” I contacted our local ME about the murder to see if it was feasible.

How to you stay in touch with your muse?

Sometimes I have to give her a good kick in the butt!

What do you think has contributed the most to your writing style?

I just do my thing.

Joe King! Here’s the interview for today’s Midnight Oil Anthology Q&A

Q&A with Joe King, an author of the Midnight Oil Anthology

  1. Inquiring minds want to know what makes you tick. Tell us about your life.

I am a former journalist turned high school English teacher. My published works include Raw Egg and Human Ants.  I recently had the pleasure of marrying the love of my life at the Hemingway Home in Key West.

  1. What was your life like before you became a writer, and how did you get your start as an author?

I was inspired to write after reading Fyodor Dostoevsky’s The Brothers Karamazov. I had read a fair amount of classic literature before, but that book really spoke to me. I though if I could write something that meant that much to somebody else as that book meant to me then I could feel like I positively contributed to humanity.

  1. Tell us about your writing process. Are you a pantser, a plotter, or something else?

I’m not really into labels like this. I write as often as possible and aim for quality and passion.

  1. Do you have a favorite writing project or a book that still haunts your dreams that you would like to share?

I have a grand idea for a mega novel that is a still a few projects away. I really can’t say much about it because all the other projects before it will be part of its development.

  1. Tell us a little about your story in the Midnight Oil Anthology.

My story in the collection is called a “A Common Place,” which is an ironic title since nothing that happens in the story is remotely common. The story involves a clash of wrongly interrupted perspectives that drive the action. I can’t give away too much without ruining all the surprises in it, but I will say it is a strange story.

  1. Do you have works in progress?

Yes, I am currently near the end of the first draft of my second novel. I went bold with this one. It’s a multi-genre blend that is pushing more that 100,000 words so far. I hope to release this work within a year. I am also about to re-release my poetry collection Human Ants with tons of new poems and art work. That should be out in a month or so.

  1. What are your plans for your next book?

This goes back to Human Ants. I’ve never self-published a work, but I am going to give it a try with this one. My main motivation in this is to cheap the price as low as possible. Poetry readers are so rare, I thought the low price could by my small way of celebrating them.

  1. Do you have an especially interesting research experience to share?

I don’t really do too much research in the type of writing I do.

  1. How to you stay in touch with your muse?

Words, words, words.

  1. What do you think has contributed the most to your writing style?

Reading a variety of classic literature. I believe the quality and quantity of what  a writer reads has a profound effect on the writing they produce.

Ray Cross wasn’t a hero; he could die too easily. But some things are worth risking death…

Ray Cross was born with a genetic disorder, resulting in a fragile body; his organs and blood vessels will rupture with any hard impact, so standing up to his best friend’s controlling boyfriend could kill him.

Ray’s life in Midland, MI gets decimated when his parents reveal they are not his real parents and his real father, a king from a secret land hidden in the far north of Canada, is dying and wishes to meet his son.

With his doctor and newly-met twin, Ray travels to the forgotten village of Yardis, where magic, myth, and corruption are abundant. But the longer Ray stays in the village learning the truth of his past and reconnecting with his father, King Vintras, the more he discovers an evil force threatening the king and his village.

But there’s more than the king and a village tied to Yardis and Ray. He finds friendship and more from a band of brothers who are part witch, dragon, and healer. With new alliances and new abilities, Ray wars with himself on playing it safe or risking it all to save the ones he loves.

Can Ray rise above his fragile disorder to become the hero for once in his life?

#MeetTheAuthor ➳ D.A. Roach is a USA Today Bestselling author who has been telling stories since she was a young girl in the suburbs of Chicago. D.A. did not find a love for books until after college. Her parents were immigrants from Lithuania and found tv and radio easier ways to hear stories so they did not do much reading or encourage it. But once she finished college and D.A. had free time, she discovered how amazing it was to get lost in a story.

D.A. is a full time mom and wife. When she is not doing domestic things (laundry, bills, etc) she is writing, reading, creating mixed media art, advocating for a rare disorder, and gardening. Oh, and she is ALWAYS listening to music. Her favorite authors include Rebecca Donovan, Richelle Mead, Larissa Ione, Stephanie Meyer, E.L. James, and Nicole Williams. Reading great works from authors like these has motivated D.A. to write her own stories. She hopes to make positive changes in the world with her art and writing.
